The Albertsons Southern California Division has reached 1,000 graduates of the Western Association of Food Chains (WAFC) Retail Management Certification (RMC) program, marking a decade-plus milestone in associate education for one of the country’s largest grocery divisions.
The free program, designed to provide accessible career development for retail associates, has grown into a division-wide initiative backed by senior leadership including Wayne Denningham, EVP and president of the SoCal Division; Jim Wallace, SVP of operations and WAFC board member; Sheryl Salazar, SVP of marketing and merchandising; Dana Rose Stauffer, VP of human resources; and Mario Fuentes, manager of learning and development.
What distinguishes the SoCal division’s RMC program, the WAFC noted, is that it has never functioned solely as an HR initiative. Graduates actively recruit peers into the program, creating an internal advocacy loop that has sustained enrollment across stores throughout the division.
Dana Rose Stauffer, VP of Human Resources, said the program reflects the division’s broader people strategy. “We believe in the power of people. Our mission is to be the leader in cultivating an inclusive workplace where every associate feels safe, valued and inspired to unleash their full potential both personally and professionally,” Stauffer said.
The Blue Badge
One visible marker of the program’s reach is the blue name badge worn by RMC graduates throughout the division — a distinct identifier that has taken on symbolic weight among store staff. The badge signals to colleagues that a graduate has completed the certification and serves as a conversation starter for associates considering enrollment.
The WAFC’s RMC program combines coursework in retail operations, management fundamentals and business principles, providing associates a pathway toward supervisory and management roles within their organizations.
