ALDI Portland, Maine

Aldi will open its first Maine location on March 26 at 1100 Brighton Ave. in Portland, marking the German discount grocer’s entry into its 40th state.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 8:45 a.m., followed by grand opening festivities.

To mark the opening, Aldi will donate $10,000 to the Good Shepherd Food Bank to support food insecurity efforts in the local community.

Chris Daniels, regional VP for Aldi, said the Portland store reflects the company’s expansion ambitions and its core value proposition.

“Shoppers will notice a smaller, easy-to-shop store layout filled with a carefully selected range of products to provide them with exactly what they need,” Daniels said.

“As more people look for better ways to stretch their dollar further, we’re excited to bring quality groceries at the lowest possible prices to Portland.”

Aldi model

The new store will feature the operational elements that define the Aldi format.

Quarter carts require shoppers to insert a quarter to unlock a cart – returned when the cart is brought back – shifting cart management responsibility to customers and reducing labor costs.

The smaller store format carries a curated assortment rather than a sprawling SKU count, enabling faster shopping trips and lower operating overhead.

Self-bagging at checkout also reduces costs, and Aldi was the first major U.S. retailer to remove single-use plastic shopping bags at checkout.

Nearly 90 percent of items on Aldi shelves are exclusive brands, with one in three described by the company as award-winning. The assortment includes organic meats, fresh produce, sustainable seafood, cheese and wine.

Part of a larger expansion

The Portland opening is one step in Aldi’s broader growth plan. The company is targeting 3,200 U.S. stores by the end of 2028.

According to the dunnhumby 2026 Retailer Preference Index, Aldi ranks as America’s fastest-growing retailer. The 2026 BrandSpark American Trust Study named it the most trusted small-format grocery store and discount supermarket for low prices and affordability in the Northeast.
