The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) recognized John Parker with the Paulson-Whitmore State Executive Award during the National Pork Industry Forum, honoring his 40-plus years as executive secretary of the Virginia Pork Council. The award was presented in partnership with the National Pork Board (NPB).
Parker’s tenure shaped Virginia’s agricultural community, producer-funded promotion and research programs and the communications infrastructure connecting state and national pork organizations.
NPPC President and Ohio pork producer Duane Stateler credited Parker’s leadership style as particularly valuable during difficult periods.
“John’s knack for bringing people together and his even-handed style was particularly valuable during times of industry challenge, especially when tough decisions required both clarity and empathy,” Stateler said.
“He became the glue that held together a diverse state council, managing board meetings, policy priorities, and producer communications with calm competence and sharp attention to detail.”
Shaping industry’s infrastructure
Parker played a direct role in forming the National Pork Board and restructuring the NPPC. His early work to improve state-national coordination helped lay the groundwork for a more unified industry.
He also launched the first State Pork Leadership Conference, which continues to develop new leaders in pork-producing states nationwide.
Beyond policy, Parker mentored incoming executives, provided counsel to peers and supported youth development through involvement with 4-H and FFA livestock programs.
Parker’s perspective
Parker deflected individual credit, pointing instead to the producers and colleagues around him.
“I never saw this role as about one person. It has always been about the producers we serve and the relationships that keep our industry moving forward,” he said.
“I have been fortunate to work alongside dedicated leaders in Virginia and across the country who care deeply about agriculture’s future, and I share this recognition with them.”
About the award
Presented annually at the National Pork Industry Forum, the Paulson-Whitmore State Executive Award is named after former state executives Don Paulson of Minnesota and Rex Whitmore of Wisconsin. It recognizes those who have made significant contributions to their state’s pork industry and to the broader missions of the NPPC and NPB.
