Independent supermarket owner Danny Hamdan and Associated Supermarket Group (ASG) will open a new Met Fresh supermarket at 7 Madison Street in Lower Manhattan, just steps from New York City Hall.
The 16,000-square-foot store will serve residents and thousands of city workers including clerks, municipal employees, first responders and office workers supporting City Hall and nearby government offices. The grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 20.
Store format
The store will feature fresh produce, high-quality meats and seafood, dairy, frozen foods and pantry staples, alongside organic, vegan and plant-based options. Shoppers can access a hot food bar, fresh sushi prepared daily, an in-house bakery, and coffee and tea offerings. Met Fresh plans to expand its online and digital offerings in the future.
The location is near major subway lines and within walking distance of Lower Manhattan’s civic and cultural landmarks, offering accessibility for commuters, residents and visitors.
“This store represents everything I believe a neighborhood supermarket should be – welcoming, high-quality, and deeply rooted in the community,” Hamdan said. “As a local business owner, I’m proud to continue investing in New York City by creating jobs, supporting local suppliers, and offering fresh, affordable food options in a space designed for today’s urban lifestyle.”
Market context
The opening comes as major food and drugstore chains continue closing locations across New York City, creating gaps in access to fresh, affordable food. The Madison Street location will create employment opportunities for local residents and stimulate neighborhood economic activity.
ASG supports Hamdan’s stores with distribution, merchandising, marketing and operational expertise, enabling independent operators to remain competitive while preserving community identities.
“Danny is the kind of operator who truly understands his community,” said Joe Garcia, co-CEO and co-president of Associated Supermarket Group.
Zulema Wiscovitch, co-CEO and co-president, added, “ASG is proud to support Danny as he continues to grow his business in New York City. His commitment to quality, service, and local investment reflects the values we champion across our independent retail network.”
Associated Supermarket Group provides retail solutions to independently-owned grocery stores throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. ASG’s banners include Associated, Associated Fresh, Compare, Compare Fresh, Met Foods, Met Fresh, Pioneer and other independently-owned store brands.
