Hannaford Supermarkets’ charitable foundation committed $1.16 million in 2025 donations to nonprofits across Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont, the Scarborough, Maine-based grocer announced Feb. 12.
The funding reflects the foundation’s continued focus on combating food insecurity, supporting learning and workforce readiness, and promoting healthier lifestyles across the Northeast.
“At Hannaford, we understand food, health and opportunity are critical to building strong communities,” said Peter Forester, chair of the Hannaford Charitable Foundation board.
“We’re proud to partner with organizations across our footprint that deliver meaningful, lasting impact for our neighbors through better access to healthy food, education and programs that improve health and well-being.”
Major investments
The foundation’s largest 2025 investment directs $750,000 to Northeastern University’s development of the new Roux Institute campus in Portland, Maine. The project is expected to help attract talent, drive innovation and strengthen Maine’s workforce, creating opportunities that benefit individuals and the regional economy.
“The Hannaford Charitable Foundation’s partnership and generous support will help generations of people and organizations to experience Northeastern University’s Portland campus, home of the Roux Institute,” said Chris Mallett, chief administrative officer at Northeastern University’s Roux Institute.
“This new, 13.5-acre waterfront campus will open in 2028 as an important community resource where opportunities for lifelong learning, research and innovation, and new venture creation intersect and thrive. The foundation’s support makes the campus possible, helping people to develop powerful experiences, networks, and partnerships that will yield a prosperous future for Maine and the surrounding region.”
The foundation also invested $210,000 in Creative Connections Clubhouse in Amsterdam, New York, supporting creation of a new recreational center to provide a healthy, accessible space for teens and young adults. The center will be the only facility of its kind in the city, serving as a multipurpose gathering space providing educational and developmental resources along with cultural activities.
“These funds turn what was once a mere thought into a definite reality,” said John Sumpter, director of outreach at Creative Connections Clubhouse.
“With this generous contribution, the gymnasium will have the opportunity to expand its programs and improve community engagement. The donation will help create an environment where people can connect, grow and support each other through shared experiences. This donation marks a significant step towards achieving the gymnasium’s full potential and making a lasting impact for years to come.”
Other 2025 donations include Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity in Vermont ($100,000), Fork Food Lab in Maine ($25,000), Midcoast Hunger Prevention Program in Maine ($25,000), Glens Falls Area Youth Center in New York ($20,000), North Berwick Food Pantry in Maine ($10,000), The Friendly Kitchen in New Hampshire ($10,000) and Bennington Early Childhood Center in Vermont ($10,000).
