Hannaford Supermarkets received a score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2026 Corporate Equality Index for the 14th consecutive year, making it the only supermarket in its market area to receive top marks on the nation’s foremost benchmarking survey measuring LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion.
The Scarborough, Maine-based grocer is one of 534 U.S. businesses to earn a perfect score this year and receive the HRC’s Equality 100 Award. Hannaford operates 188 stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York.
“This is a meaningful recognition of Hannaford’s ongoing commitment to being the most welcoming place to work and shop,” said Julie Libby, VP of human resources for Hannaford Supermarkets.
“This achievement underscores our commitment to inclusive policies, equitable benefits, and meaningful engagement with the communities we serve. More importantly, it reflects our belief that when people feel seen, respected and supported, they can truly thrive at work, as customers, and in the communities we serve.”
Hannaford’s efforts to provide an inclusive work environment for the LGBTQ+ community satisfied all CEI criteria across four central pillars: non-discrimination policies across business entities, equitable benefits for LGBTQ+ workers and their families, supporting an inclusive culture, and outreach and engagement.
Hannaford offers inclusive benefits and policies relevant to the LGBTQ+ community, including medical, dental and vision coverage available to same-sex spouses and domestic partnerships, as well as paid parental leave, fertility and adoption assistance for all eligible associates.
Associates have access to the LGBTQ+ and Friends Business Resource Group, which supports initiatives for the LGBTQ+ community and drives engagement, increases awareness and builds community and allyship for LGBTQ+ associates throughout the company.
