United Supermarkets socks

United Supermarkets donated 1,000 pairs of socks to the Salvation Army of Lubbock on Feb. 6, marking the seventh year The United Family has partnered with Rainier Fruit on the Apples & Pears on a Mission initiative.

The donation stems from a program where a portion of proceeds from purchasing Rainier fruit during fall and winter went toward buying new socks for organizations supporting the homeless community.

“For some, a new pair of socks can make a world of difference,” said Joseph Bunting, produce business director for The United Family. “That’s why we are so grateful to partner with Rainier Fruits to do this program for the seventh year. We are also thankful to our guests for participating and helping us positively impact our community.”

The Lubbock donation represents one of six contributions across Texas. Throughout February, The United Family and Rainier Fruit will provide 5,000 pairs of socks to charitable organizations. Over seven years, the companies have donated more than 35,000 pairs of socks.

In addition to Lubbock, Salvation Army chapters in Abilene, Amarillo, Midland and Odessa will receive socks this year, as will Faith Mission of Wichita Falls.
