Tokyo Central, operated by Marukai Corporation, has opened its 15th U.S. location in Emeryville, California.

The new store spans 40,635 square feet and includes a 1,625-square-foot sushi bar called Handroll Factory. It is Tokyo Central’s second Northern California location, adding to its network of 12 stores in California and two in Hawaii.

Situated between Oakland and Berkeley, the Emeryville location is part of Bay Street Emeryville, an open-air destination known for its arts, entertainment and walkable urban design.

“Emeryville’s dynamic and culturally rich environment makes it an ideal home for Tokyo Central,” said Koichi Toyo, president of Marukai Corporation. “The community’s appreciation for global flavors and creative living aligns perfectly with our mission to deliver authentic Japanese products and experiences.”

The store is organized around Tokyo Central’s concept of “Eat, Enjoy, Explore – Bring Japan to Your Table,” which highlights Japanese culinary traditions such as ichiju-sansai (one soup and three dishes), seasonal ingredients and curated cookware.

The Handroll Factory sushi bar serves hand rolls individually as guests finish eating, with each featuring warm Hitomebore rice from Japan and Ariake nori toasted before serving.

The menu includes fresh bluefin tuna and specialty vinegar crafted from Rishiri kelp stock. The store also offers to-go chirashi sushi options.

A grand opening celebration took place Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, during which promotions included $10 gift cards for the first 100 customers each day, spin-the-wheel prizes, exclusive sales, 20 percent off sushi and bento packs and a dance performance.

Founded in 1965, Marukai Corporation was acquired in 2013 by Japan-based Don Quijote Holdings. The company offers a variety of imported Japanese goods, including food, health products, cosmetics, home furnishings and prepared foods.
