Violet Foods LLC, a portfolio company of Amphora Equity Partners, has acquired the Muir Glen brand of organic tomato products from General Mills Inc. (NYSE: GIS).
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The acquisition marks a significant expansion for Violet Foods, which owns a portfolio of brands including Sclafani, Fattoria Fresca and Don Pepino, the No. 1 pizza sauce brand in the Northeast. By integrating Muir Glen’s nationally distributed organic tomato products with Violet Foods’ established position in fresh-pack tomato offerings, the company is building a complementary product portfolio to better serve its retail partners across the U.S. tomato sauces and canned tomato market.
“Acquiring Muir Glen is a transformative step for our company,” said Jim Mitchell, president of Violet Foods. “By combining Muir Glen’s 35-year legacy in organic tomatoes with Violet Foods’ expertise in high-quality, fresh-pack tomato products, we are uniquely positioned to accelerate innovation and facilitate growth for our customers.”
Muir Glen was founded in 1991 by a group of entrepreneurs in California with extensive experience in the tomato industry who sought to provide a premium-quality organic option. The brand produces a variety of organic food products ranging from canned and jarred organic tomatoes to pasta and pizza sauces, salsas and ketchup. All Muir Glen tomato production takes place in California.
General Mills acquired Muir Glen as part of its purchase of Small Planet Foods in 2001.
“We are grateful to General Mills for their collaboration throughout the transaction process,” said David West, managing partner at Amphora Equity Partners. “We are eager to build on the momentum that they created with this incredible brand.”
Violet Foods is a Williamstown, New Jersey-based manufacturer of fresh-pack tomato products with operations dating back more than 100 years. Violet Foods acquired the Don Pepino and Sclafani brands from B&G Foods in May 2025.
Amphora Equity Partners is a private investor that makes control investments in the North American packaged food and beverage sector. The firm focuses on well-established branded products and contract manufacturing businesses.
