Amazon Fresh closure

Amazon is closing all its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores to focus on online grocery delivery and Whole Foods Market expansion, with various locations converting to Whole Foods stores.

In addition, the Seattle-based company plans to open more than 100 new Whole Foods Market stores over the next few years and will expand same-day delivery of fresh groceries to additional communities in 2026.

The company also will debut five additional Whole Foods Market Daily Shop locations by year’s end.

Amazon reports more than $150 billion in grocery gross sales with some 150 million customers shopping groceries annually, ranking it among the top three U.S. grocers.

Everyday household essentials represent one out of every three units sold online.

Accelerating online delivery

Amazon introduced perishables into its same-day delivery service in 2025, with sales growing 40 times since January 2025.

Fresh groceries now comprise nine of the top 10 most-ordered items in areas where they are available for same-day delivery.

The company recently introduced Amazon Now, a fast delivery option bringing thousands of items, including fresh food, to customers in about 30 minutes or less in several cities.

Online grocery delivery reaches millions of customers in more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns through Whole Foods Market, Amazon Fresh online and partnerships with Weis Markets, Winn-Dixie and Metropolitan Market.

Whole Foods growth

Whole Foods Market, which has seen more than 40 percent sales growth since Amazon’s 2017 acquisition, now operates more than 550 locations.

The company has reported record-breaking customer traffic and year-over-year comparable store growth outpacing the broader industry.

Whole Foods Market Daily Shop, a smaller store format featuring grab-and-go meals, coffee and other items has five locations.

Store closures and technology migration

Amazon will help employees from stores that are being shutter find roles elsewhere in its operations network.

Amazon Go locations served as innovation hubs for developing Just Walk Out technology, which now operates in more than 360 third-party locations across five countries.

The technology reduced cafeteria wait times from 25 to three minutes at BayCare’s St. Joseph’s Hospital and enables fans at Scotiabank Arena to grab concessions in 30 seconds.

Amazon is expanding Just Walk Out technology to its own operations, with more than 40 North American fulfillment centers using it in breakrooms. The company plans additional deployments in 2026.

Future retail concepts

Amazon will continue testing physical store experiences, including Amazon Grocery in Chicago, and the “store within a store” experience at Whole Foods Market in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, where customers can buy Amazon groceries and household items.

The company is exploring a new supercenter physical retail concept designed for customers to shop Amazon fresh groceries, household essentials and general merchandise.
