Otis Spunkmeyer has removed all artificial food grade dyes from its branded baked goods, with 100 percent of products manufactured after Jan. 1 not having any Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic (FD&C) colors.
The reformulation affects all Otis Spunkmeyer cookies, muffins and sweet baked goods sold in foodservice and retail in-store bakery channels. A small number of products previously contained FD&C colors, and those recipes have been updated to eliminate the artificial dyes.
Otis Spunkmeyer holds the No. 1 market share in foodservice cookies and muffins, having maintained the position for more than five years. The Los Angeles-based brand has a nearly 50-year history in the sweet baked goods industry.
The company is a participant in the American Bakers Association’s “Baked Goods in Schools Pledge,” a voluntary commitment by ABA members to eliminate FD&C colors from all baked goods provided to schools through the National School Breakfast, Lunch and Competitive Foods Programs by the beginning of the 2026-27 school year.
The reformulation aligns with evolving consumer expectations and the changing food landscape as customers increasingly seek products without artificial ingredients.
Established in 1977 as a chain of retail cookie stores, Otis Spunkmeyer expanded its business to support foodservice operators with a fresh-baked cookie program complete with ovens and merchandising tools.
Today, the brand offers cookies and baked goods for foodservice, retail, fundraising, convenience stores and vending.
