Gelson’s Markets has reached an agreement to sell its La Costa store in Carlsbad to Ralph’s, with ownership and operations expected to transfer on March 9.
This store has faced ongoing financial challenges for several years, and despite continued efforts to improve performance, it remains unprofitable. After careful consideration, Gelson’s made the decision to sell the store to Ralph’s.
The sale only involves the La Costa location and Gelson’s will continue normal operations at its Del Mar and Pacific Beach stores in San Diego. Gelson’s also continues to invest in its business, including plans to open a new store in Toluca Lake in early 2026.
The company shared in a statement that it “intend[s] to operate the La Costa store through the end of February, with the transition to Ralph’s expected to take place during the first week of March. Throughout this process, our top priority has been the employees who work there. We intentionally sought a buyer willing to retain as many team members as possible rather than pursuing a closure without transition opportunities.”
This store has been part of the Carlsbad community for the past 10 years, and Gelson’s is grateful for the dedication and commitment of the team at the La Costa store. “We remain focused on supporting them during the coming weeks,” the company said. “We also want to thank our Carlsbad area customers for their loyalty and look forward to welcoming them at our Del Mar and Pacific Beach locations.
