Meijer brought holiday joy to almost a thousand customers and employees during its 12th annual Very Merry Meijer event, surprising shoppers and staff with gift cards and acts of generosity at stores across the region this week.
The surprise-and-delight tradition, which began in 2014, returned as a seasonal highlight for the family-operated retailer. During the one-day event, Meijer leaders presented a randomly selected in-store or pickup customer with a $1,000 gift card, while multiple team members at each store received $200 gift cards as a holiday thank-you.
“Shopping for the people you love most is one of life’s greatest joys, and we’re honored to play even a small part in making that possible. This is our heartfelt way of helping customers who may need extra support to make the holiday season truly magical for their families,” said Meijer President and CEO Rick Keyes.
“Moments like these fill our stores with the spirit of giving and remind us why we do what we do – it’s all about thanking our customers and team members within the communities we proudly serve.”
The gifts were distributed randomly – either to customers while shopping or at the checkout lane. Many recipients shared emotional responses as they learned of their surprise, describing how the unexpected support would help make the season brighter for their families.
In Columbus, Ohio, a single mother recently laid off from her job was selected and expressed deep gratitude for the support that will help her family celebrate. In Lincoln Park, Michigan, a store director surprised a family navigating a difficult period by also presenting wrapped Barbies for each of the children alongside the gift cards.
Meijer also continued its tradition of honoring employees through the Very Merry Meijer festivities, surprising multiple team members in each store with $200 gift cards as part of the retailer’s broader seasonal giving and community engagement efforts.
The Very Merry Meijer event has become a cherished annual holiday tradition across the retailer’s Midwest footprint, bringing moments of generosity and celebration to both customers and employees.
