Weis Markets has completed a full deployment of Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions’ ELERA Security Suite across its store network, advancing the company’s efforts to modernize its front-end operations and strengthen loss-prevention capabilities.
The technology is active in the self-checkout lanes of all 199 Weis Markets stores. The retailer plans to extend the system to dual-use and cashier-operated lanes as the next phase of its front-end modernization strategy.
Greg Zeh, Weis Markets’ chief information officer and SVP, said the rollout aligns with the grocer’s goal of enhancing both operational precision and customer experience.
“Our goal is to upgrade our technology stack and invest in ELERA Security Suite to provide a frictionless experience for our customers,” Zeh said.
“Our customers have embraced produce recognition, with over 94 percent selecting to use it at self-checkout. We are one of the first retail chains with ELERA Security Suite across our stores, ensuring speed, privacy and performance. It is already strengthening real-time loss prevention.”
ELERA Security Suite uses edge-based artificial intelligence to identify produce items and detect behaviors associated with shrink as transactions occur. The system delivers real-time prompts and alerts, allowing staff to respond to issues immediately rather than relying on post-event review.
The ELERA Produce Recognition module has been one of the most widely adopted features of the rollout. The system automatically identifies unpackaged produce, reducing one of the most common sources of scanning delays and minimizing the likelihood of miskeys or inaccurate item selections.
Toshiba said the platform’s modular, on-device architecture lowers reliance on centralized servers and reduces ongoing maintenance requirements. By upgrading to ELERA, Weis Markets consolidated several front-end functions into a single operational framework, improving visibility across lanes and easing technology management for store teams.
The deployment represents one of the earliest enterprise-wide implementations of ELERA Security Suite in the U.S. grocery sector. Toshiba plans to showcase the platform at NRF 2026: Retail’s Big Show in January, where it will highlight advancements in AI-driven checkout and loss prevention.
Weis Markets officials said the completion of this rollout marks a key milestone in the company’s long-term technology investment strategy, which aims to support more efficient store operations, reduce shrink and maintain a consistent customer experience across its footprint.
