Northgate González Market has opened its newest store in Lynwood, California, marking a major milestone for the family-owned Hispanic grocer and the community it serves.

The grand opening took place Nov. 12 after years of planning, environmental cleanup and community anticipation. The 36,974-square-foot market was unveiled during a celebration featuring mariachi music and appearances by local and state dignitaries, who highlighted the store’s role in expanding food access and economic opportunity in an area previously designated a food desert.

“We are thrilled to finally open our doors to the Lynwood community,” said Oscar González, co-president of Northgate González Market. “This store is a reflection of our commitment to innovation, quality and community.”

The Lynwood store reflects Northgate’s focus on authentic Mexican flavors, high-quality groceries and warm, personalized service. The property underwent extensive environmental remediation supported by the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to convert the former industrial site into a safe, vibrant community space. The store features murals created by local artist Levi Ponce.

DTSC Director Katherine Butler noted the significance of the cleanup efforts in supporting the transformation. “Environmental cleanup lays the foundation for projects like this – turning properties that once posed risks into safe, useful spaces that serve the community,” she said.

The opening brings about 250 new jobs to Lynwood, most of which have been filled by local residents. As part of its community commitment, Northgate is donating $5,000 in children’s books by author Patty Rodriguez to local schools and $50,000 to the Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation to fund scholarships and classroom grants.

The store features several of Northgate’s signature departments, including:

  • Tamalería, offering handmade, stone-ground masa tamales;
  • Tortillería La González, producing fresh and seasonal tortillas;
  • Pastelería La González, with freshly baked pan dulce, bolillos and tres leches cakes;
  • Carnicería, home of the brand’s well-known carne asada;
  • Carnitas Don Miguel, prepared traditionally in cazos; and
  • A robust chiles and spices section featuring Rancho Gonzalez products.

Northgate González Market also announced plans to open two additional California stores, in Stanton and La Mirada, in 2026.
