FoodMaxx celebrated the grand opening of two new stores Nov. 5 – at 844 Blossom Hill Road in San Jose and 3705 El Camino Real in Santa Clara – with a community “Bag Your Savings” competition that raised more than $8,500 for local nonprofits.

The new stores, operated by The Save Mart Companies and formerly Lucky locations, bring warehouse-style savings to California shoppers.
“Silicon Valley families told us they need relief from high grocery costs, and FoodMaxx delivers,” said Jim Perkins, president of The Save Mart Companies.
“We’re talking chicken breast at $1.49 a pound, avocados 10 for $5 – warehouse prices without a membership fee. These stores help every dollar go further while supporting the local organizations that strengthen our communities.”
As part of the grand opening, each store hosted a “Bag Your Savings” competition where teams from local nonprofits raced to bag groceries. The competition celebrated FoodMaxx’s bag-your-own model while raising awareness for organizations serving local families. All bagged items were donated to community pantries. In addition, all competing charities received gift cards to shop for more essentials on their next trip to FoodMaxx.
Participating organizations:
- San Jose: Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, Sacred Heart Community Service.
- Santa Clara: Bill Wilson Center, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley.
Unlike typical membership warehouse clubs, FoodMaxx is open to everyone, with no membership fee required. Shoppers save by bagging their own groceries, a model that cuts costs and, as the competition demonstrated, builds community.
“We are proud to continue serving our neighbors with a store that helps every dollar go further, while keeping the same friendly team members our shoppers know and trust,” said Nick Chan, VP of operations at FoodMaxx.
San Jose Earthquakes player Beau Leroux greeted fans at the San Jose store, signing autographs and celebrating with the community throughout the afternoon. On Nov. 8, the first 100 shoppers at each location who make a $20 purchase will receive a free bag of groceries worth more than $50, plus a $10-off-$50 digital coupon for their next visit.
