The Independent Grocers Alliance has begun a Red Oval partnership with Flashfood, an app-based marketplace that will allow IGA retailers to offer fresh groceries in surplus or nearing their best-by date at significant discounts to shoppers.
Through the partnership, IGA retailers can integrate Flashfood’s digital platform into their stores, gaining access to technology that reduces shrink, drives incremental revenue and delivers environmental benefits.
Customers browse and pay for these items – including meat, produce, dairy, bakery and center-store goods – through the Flashfood app, then pick them up in-store.
Benefits for independent grocers
- Reduced shrink: By offering surplus and close-coded products through Flashfood, grocers recover revenue that would otherwise be lost to waste.
- Environmental impact: Flashfood already has diverted more than 150 million pounds of food from landfills. With IGA’s participation, independent retailers will play a larger role in reducing the climate impact of food waste.
- New customer engagement: The app introduces grocers to new shoppers while creating loyalty through savings and sustainability.
- Operational simplicity: Flashfood’s turnkey solution is easy to implement and backed by support to ensure a smooth onboarding experience for grocers of all sizes.
“Independent grocers are constantly balancing operational efficiency with community values,” said IGA VP of Brand Development Michael La Kier. “Our partnership with Flashfood empowers retailers to do both – recover lost revenue while helping families save money and protect the environment.”
IGA members and those curious about Flashfood and IGA can attend “From Waste to Revenue: Smarter Strategies for Grocery Profitability,” the first of two webinars, on Oct. 14.
During the session, IGA and Flashfood will share real-world examples of grocers who have cut shrink by up to 27 percent, captured $28-plus in incremental in-store spend per order and attracted shoppers who visit 3.9 times more often. Click here to register.
“Flashfood is excited to partner with IGA to support its diverse network of independent retailers,” said Flashfood VP of Revenue Tyler Simmons. “Together, we’ll help grocers across the country improve their bottom line, attract new shoppers and have a meaningful impact across hundreds of communities.”
