Schnuck Markets Inc., along with its customers and vendors, has pledged $150,000 to Folds of Honor Foundation, a nonprofit that provides educational scholarships to the spouses and children of veterans and first responders who were killed or injured in the line of duty.
The “Round Up at the Register” campaign, which ran May 14-27 at all Schnucks locations, encouraged customers to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar to benefit the foundation.
The funds will provide 30 educational scholarships. Schnucks presented a check to Folds of Honor on July 11 prior to the St. Louis Cardinals baseball game at Busch Stadium.
“Our customers’ willingness to round up a few cents at a time makes a tremendous difference in the lives of the families of our military veterans and first responders, and I thank them for their continued generosity,” said Schnucks Chairman and CEO Todd Schnuck.
“I also thank the many Schnucks teammates who continue to live our company’s mission to nourish people’s lives while also ensuring the Folds of Honor ‘Round Up at the Register’ is an unmitigated success each and every year.”
Folds of Honor was established in 2007 after Maj. Dan Rooney, a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, saw the family of a fallen U.S. Army corporal meeting their loved one’s flag-draped coffin on an airport tarmac. The nonprofit has awarded about 62,000 scholarships to military and first responder spouses and children.
“We’re so proud of the longstanding partnership with Schnucks, the Schnuck family and their teammates. Over the past eight years, their support has helped solidify the Missouri/Southern Illinois Chapter as one of the strongest in the Folds of Honor system,” said Doug Mitchell, president of the board for Folds of Honor Missouri and Southern Illinois.
“And we’re once again humbled by the generosity of the Schnucks customers. Their willingness to ‘Round Up At The Register’ for the families of fallen or injured military service members or first responders has resulted in 1,140 scholarships, equaling $5.7 million of educational impact in our area. A big salute to all those customers that have answered the call.”
