Busch’s Fresh Food Market, a family-owned supermarket chain in southeastern Michigan, has begun offering hyperlocal produce that will vary throughout the fall and summer months and come from farms near its stores.
Among the company’s 16 stores, participating locations include Ann Arbor, Brighton, Canton, Dexter, Novi, Plymouth, Saline, South Lyon and West Bloomfield.
“Michigan is such a great agricultural state, and we want to provide customers with the very best and freshest produce while also supporting farms in our community,” said Busch’s Fresh Food Market President Bobby Turner.
“Our focus is always on sourcing products locally, and we already carry 2,500 local items which connect Michigan manufacturers with our guests. Now guests can enjoy seasonal produce which is arriving from a farm maybe just 10 miles away.”
In 2024, Busch’s Fresh Food Market sold 25,813 units of hyperlocal produce, where a unit is defined as either an individual item or a pound, depending on the product. This year, the company aims to bring more fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables into stores and shopping baskets, with a goal of achieving more than 10 percent growth in units sold.
Metro Detroit farms taking part in this year’s initiative are:
- Garden Fort Farms in Dexter – produce includes microgreens, pea shoots, sun shoots, winter spinach, arugula, lettuce mix and greens mix;
- Jacob’s Fresh Farm in Dexter – produce includes green curly kale, Swiss chard, collard greens, green zucchini, yellow zucchini, yellow summer squash, kohlrabi, sungold cherry tomatoes, heirloom slicing tomatoes, tomatillos, Italian eggplant, poblano peppers and pattypan squash; and
- Green Things Farm Collective in Ann Arbor – organic produce includes dill, curly parsley, Italian parsley, rainbow kale, green onions, bunch radishes, cilantro, green leaf head lettuce, red bunch beets, fennel, summer crisp lettuce and carrot.

“Our partnerships with local farms not only deliver peak freshness and flavor but also deepen our ties to the Southeast Michigan community by supporting the dedicated farmers who make our region thrive.”
Busch’s Fresh Food Market was founded by Joe Busch and Charlie Mattis in 1975, when they took over two Vescio’s supermarkets in Clinton and Saline and renamed them J&C Family Foods. When Joe Busch retired in 1986, his sons John, Doug and Tim took over the family business and continued to build and acquire more stores. Now the company, which is headquartered in Ann Arbor, has stores located in Oakland, Wayne, Washtenaw, Livingston and Lenawee counties, and has 1,600 employees.
Busch’s Fresh Food Market stores offer a broad assortment of fresh produce, premium meats and seafood, scratch-made deli offerings, fresh bakery items, specialty and local products and an extensive selection of wine and craft beer. Fresh baked goods are prepared daily at The Bakehouse in Clinton and delivered to all locations seven days a week.
The company has focused on in-store renovations in recent years to offer customers an improved shopping experience. Last year, the Novi store and Farmington Hills stores were remodeled.
