Associated Supermarket Group (ASG) joined independent grocers from across the country May 20-21 for the 2025 NGA Fly-In for Fair Competition in Washington, D.C., meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to advocate for industry priorities.
Discussions focused on protecting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), lowering credit card swipe fees and ensuring fair pricing across the supply chain.
Following the efforts in D.C., attention turned to Staten Island, New York, where community and business leaders gathered to oppose proposed SNAP cuts.
Sen. Chuck Schumer condemned a proposed bill that could leave thousands without food assistance. Bill Fani, owner of Met Foods, emphasized that SNAP is not only a lifeline for families but also a driver of local grocery businesses.
ASG remains committed to advocating for policies that strengthen independent supermarkets and the communities they serve.
Key advocacy issues:
- SNAP protection: Essential for food security and local business sustainability;
- Swipe fee reform: Urging passage of the Credit Card Competition Act; and
- Fair supply chain pricing: Addressing rising costs impacting independent grocers.
