In honor of Armed Forces Day on May 17, Kent’s Market in Plain City, Utah, partnered with Operation Homefront for a large-scale grocery donation event where more than 400 military families received about $700 worth of groceries each, totaling nearly $300,000.

“This was an event beyond all events. Every family walked away with a literal ‘haul’ of groceries, and we were thrilled to give back to those who give so much,” said Kati Calhoun, executive director of marketing for Kent’s.

“Military families move a lot, and this helps relieve some of that stress. It’s not only about providing for their needs; it’s also about the community wrapping its arms around our military members. They wear that uniform and protect our communities, and it’s our honor to support them in return.”

Kent’s parking lot became a hub of appreciation and support for military personnel and their families, many of whom were recently stationed in Utah.

Each family received an assortment of goods, including cases of beverages and water, cleaning supplies, 10-12 sacks of groceries, bags of bread and pastries and fresh produce.

Every family also got a barbecue meal and $50 gift card to shop at Kent’s.

“These military families are those with lower incomes and whose spouses are currently serving our country,” said Derid Kunz, director of center store sales and advertising at Associated Food Stores. “Jon Fawson and Kati are truly pillars in their communities and know how important it is to serve the local families who show loyalty to their stores.

“AFS and our vendor partners are honored to help Kent’s serve those men and women that provide us freedom through their military service.”

Volunteers from Operation Homefront, Hill Air Force Base, more than 25 vendor partners and AFS worked to distribute products and load vehicles. Shoppers even joined in to help fill trunks, backseats and hatchbacks with groceries.

The event also featured prize giveaways, including sporting goods, camping gear and outdoor equipment.
