Employees with Fareway Stores Inc. continued the company’s annual tradition of teaming up with the Murphy Family Foundation to pack meals ahead of Easter in Johnston, Iowa.

Forty-eight volunteers, split between two shifts, assembled 2,000 meal kits for a total weight of 12,000 pounds.

The 9 a.m. crew, consisting of 21 Fareway team members and five representatives from the foundation, completed 1,000 meals in 66 minutes. The 1:30 p.m. shift saw 22 volunteers fill 1,000 meals in the same amount of time.

In addition, 12 Fareway volunteers spent 75 minutes packing 69 cases of oatmeal packets for a total of 897 pounds – a new Food Bank of Iowa record.
