Coborn’s Inc. has signed a purchase agreement to acquire two grocery stores operated by the Kessler family under the Kessler’s Food and Grocery banner in northeastern South Dakota.
The locations included in the acquisition are:
- Kessler’s Food and Grocery: 621 6th Ave. SE in Aberdeen, South Dakota; and
- Kessler’s Food and Fuel: 308 N Broadway in Miller, South Dakota.
“The Kessler family has run their family of stores with great care and is a highly respected retailer,” said Chris Coborn, chairman, president and CEO.
“We look forward to extending the same operating philosophies in these locations that have made us successful for 104 years – investing and training for our people, supporting our communities and investing in our stores to improve the experience for our guests. We look forward to having the entire Kessler’s team join us and to learn more about their operations and communities.”
About 250 people work in the two locations and will all be hired by Coborn’s. The stores will continue to operate under the Kessler’s Food and Grocery name.
“Kessler’s has always prioritized quality, service and convenience, offering fresh produce, floral, meat, seafood, in-store bakeries and delis. Their success is driven by dedicated employees, strong customer relationships and a commitment to community engagement. Customer satisfaction remains a core value, reflected in their focus on competitive prices, high-quality products and continuous improvement,” Coborn said.
Reed Kessler, current owner of Kessler’s, described the sale as “the right fit for our family and employees.”
“Coborn’s is a respected company that shares our values, commitment to employees and community support,” he said. “We’re grateful to our customers and employees for seven decades of success and know they’re in good hands.”
The sale is expected to close in early April, pending customary conditions. With this acquisition and the early 2026 opening of Coborn’s Market & Table in Plymouth, Minnesota, Coborn’s will expand to 80 grocery locations across six states.
