Hen House is developing a flagship store in the former Macy’s building at 7070 Mission Road in Prairie Village, Kansas, that will replace a nearby location.
The project commenced Jan. 14 with a ceremonial “wall-breaking,” marking the beginning of construction on the historic 75-year-old site.
The redevelopment is a collaboration with First Washington Realty, which owns The Shops of Prairie Village. Hen House will occupy the first floor of the two-story, mixed-use building, with additional retail spaces planned for the second floor.
Construction is expected to be completed by mid-2026, with the Hen House at 6950 Mission Road remaining open throughout the process.
“We have always wanted to have a better store for our community here,” said Mike Beal, CFO of Balls Food Stores, the parent company of Hen House. “This is going to be the best grocery store anywhere close to this in Kansas City.”
The new store will feature:
- Expanded retail space: Increased to 40,000 square feet, more than twice the size of the current store, offering a more spacious shopping environment with expanded departments.
- Enhanced offerings: Expanded produce, meat, seafood, floral, bakery and delicatessen departments, including a cheese island and market grille.
- Modern features: Amenities designed to improve overall guest experience, along with high efficiency refrigeration systems and LED lighting.
Prairie Village Mayor Eric Mikkelson highlighted the positive impact of the redevelopment.
“It’s an iconic location, part of the fabric of our community,” he said. “The opportunity to beautify and modernize it in a way that preserves what we love about Prairie Village is welcome.”
Hen House Market is owned by Balls Food Stores. Founded in 1923, the company operates 25 grocery stores under different banners in the greater Kansas City area, where it is headquartered, as well as Tippins Pies. Balls recently announced a 100 percent Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP).
