Wildfires Destroy Gelson’s Palisades Store In SoCal

Extreme fire conditions are impacting Southern California, with four wildfires in Los Angeles County and one in Ventura County.

Excessive winds are a primary driver and are beginning to subside, but not disappear. The three major incidents are the Palisades, Eaton and Hurst fires. Additional fire starts are still possible given the conditions, and at least two people have died. Information and resources on all fires are available on the CalFire Incident site.

Gelson’s Markets, headquartered in Encino, California, had one of its stores destroyed by fire.

Gelson’s President and CEO Ryan Adams shared this update:

“The wildfires affecting our region have brought devastating loss and disruption to our communities. With a heavy heart, we share that our Palisades store has been completely lost to the fires. This store was more than just a place to shop – it was a cornerstone of the community, and we grieve this loss alongside the team members, customers and neighbors who called it their own.

“Our La Cañada location is currently under mandatory evacuation and remains closed until it is safe to return. Additionally, our Calabasas store has been temporarily closed due to fire warnings, and we continue to prioritize the safety of everyone involved. These closures, while necessary, underscore the profound impact these fires are having on our communities.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by these tragedies. We are committed to supporting our employees during this challenging time, ensuring they have access to resources and aid as they navigate their own hardships.

“As a company rooted in the communities we serve, we are also exploring every avenue to assist in recovery efforts. We will stand with our neighbors as we work together to rebuild what has been lost. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we navigate this difficult time. Your support means everything to us, and we will continue to keep you updated as the situation evolves.”

Gelson’s Palisades store celebrated its 45th anniversary in August.

The California Grocers Association is tracking the status of impacted grocery stores to both quantify the immediate impact and prepare for reopening. This will help the organization coordinate with government agencies for speedy recovery and reopening. The CGA asks that any grocers experiencing impacts to their operational status email Tim James ([email protected]) with information regarding affected stores.
