Walmart shared in a recent blog post that the retailer will close all 51 Walmart Health centers, as well as Walmart Health Virtual Care.
Through its experience operating the centers, the retailer “determined there is not a sustainable business model for us to continue.” Walmart does not have a date for when each center will close but plans to share the dates as soon as decisions are made.
Launched in 2019, Walmart Health offers omnichannel access to care, with locations in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri and Texas.
This news comes on the heels of the retailer’s grand openings in Texas, where Walmart shared plans to add 15 additional locations across the state.
Additionally, Walmart shared that the retailer will continue operating its pharmacy and vision centers as normal. The company shared that “while we will no longer operate health centers, we will take what we learned as we provide trusted health and wellness services across the country through our nearly 4,600 pharmacies and more than 3,000 vision centers.”
Employees currently at Walmart Health Centers will have the option to transfer to any other Walmart or Sam’s Club location. They will be paid for 90 days, unless they transfer to another location during that time or leave the company.
“We are deeply grateful to these associates and providers for their caring service to patients in our communities and to the patients who trusted us with their care,” the company stated.
