Throughout February and early March, United Supermarkets joined with Rainier Fruit to donate more than 5,000 pairs of socks across Texas through the “Pears for Pairs” program.
In the fall and winter months of 2023, a portion of the proceeds from the sales of Rainier Fruit pears and apples went toward buying new socks for homeless organizations.
Socks are often one of the most requested items at homeless shelters, but they can also be one of the least donated items.
More than 25,000 pairs of socks have been donated through this program over the last five years.
“For some, a new pair of socks can make a world of difference,” said Joseph Bunting, produce business director for The United Family.
“That’s why we are so grateful to once again partner with Rainer Fruits to do this program. We are also thankful to our guests for participating and helping us raise the funds for the socks.”
The following organizations received socks: Salvation Army of Amarillo, Salvation Army of Midland/Salvation Army of Odessa, Salvation Army of Lubbock, Salvation Army of Abilene and Faith Mission of Wichita Falls.
