Big Y Adds Three Supermarkets, Convenience Store

Big Y Foods Inc. has reached an agreement to acquire the leasehold interests for three supermarkets in New England.

The locations are 1076 Post Road East in Westport, Connecticut; 14 Candlewood Lake Road in Brookfield, Connecticut; and 290 Turnpike Road in Westborough, Massachusetts.

Big Y teams have assessed each location to determine how soon they can convert and remodel them into supermarkets, a process that could start as early as within four-six months depending upon equipment lead times.

The locations tie in with its growth strategy, which includes a new  supermarket under construction in Middletown, Connecticut, and one that is planned for Uxbridge, Massachusetts. They will bring the number of locations to 77.

The company also is acquiring a gas and convenience store at 342 Washington Ave. in North Haven, Connecticut, across the street from a Big Y supermarket. It will become the chain’s 18th Big Y Express.

”All of us at Big Y are excited about the opportunity to enter into these communities with our unique fresh and local foods along with our exceptional and knowledgeable employees,” said Michael D’Amour, president and CEO. “These locations fit nicely within our current store footprint.”
