As part of its pep+ (PepsiCo Positive) sustainable packaging initiative, New York-based PepsiCo Beverages North America is rolling out paper-based solutions to replace plastic rings across multipacks.
The company announced the new paperboard designs will appear in a phased, regional approach across the U.S. later this year. It is the first beverage company to commit to such an effort in North America.
The conversion to more sustainable packaging will include brands such as Pepsi, Pepsi Zero, Mountain Dew, Starry and Gatorade. It will also include 7Up in Canada. The packaging will feature a consumer-friendly branded-design, made from recycled materials.
Through this transition, PepsiCo aims to eliminate millions of pounds of plastics from its packaging in North America over the coming years while continuing to enable packaging circularity. The innovation will drive progress toward its pep+ goals to reduce virgin plastic from nonrenewable sources per serving across its global beverage and convenient foods portfolio by 50 percent by 2030.
PepsiCo’s product portfolio includes a range of foods and beverages, including many brands that generate more than $1 billion each in estimated annual retail sales. They include Lay’s, Doritos, Cheetos, Gatorade, Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, Quaker and SodaStream.
