The Alabama Grocers Education Foundation has awarded $50,250 in scholarships to employees or children of employees from Alabama Grocers Association member companies for the 2023-24 academic year.
These included 36 AGEF funded scholarships, 11 Piggyback Scholarships and five Memorial Scholarships.
“To date, the Alabama Grocers Foundation has awarded more than $1.4 million in scholarships,” said Ellie Taylor, president of the AGA. “We are excited to invest in the enrichment and education of the members of our industry.”
Tate Thomas of Campbell’s Snacks and recipient of an AGEF Scholarship said, “As we all know, pursuing higher education can be financially straining, and this scholarship will undoubtedly ease my financial burden, especially when it comes to expenses like tuition and textbooks.
“Beyond the financial benefits, this scholarship represents recognition of my hard work and dedication. It serves as a motivator for me to continue pushing myself to achieve academic excellence. Overall, I’m grateful for this scholarship, not only for its financial aid but also for the encouragement and validation it provides. I feel energized and inspired to work even harder towards my academic and professional goals.”
The Alabama Grocers Education Foundation recognizes and aids students with scholarships who are related to Alabama’s food industry by virtue of their parent’s employment or their own part-time employment by firms which are members of the AGA.
The scholarship program highlights the association’s interest in student development by providing financial assistance. This year, the foundation received more than 90 applications.
“We are thankful to our members and other supporters of the Alabama Grocers Association,” said Tom Sayers of Publix Super Markets Inc., chairman, board of trustees for AGEF. “Over the years, their donations have made these scholarships possible, impacting the lives of hundreds of young people.”
Scholarships are awarded by an impartial committee of educators and are based on community involvement and academic achievements. Funds are raised from the generosity of supporters, members and friends of the Alabama Grocers Association, and three annual events: AGEF Golf Outing, AGEF Silent Auction and AGEF Clay Shoot.
