UNFI has begun work on a new distribution center north of Sarasota, Florida, that will replace an aging facility and incorporate the latest in warehouse technology to increase efficiency in selecting, packing and loading processes.
The center is being built within the SRQ Logistics Center, a 300-acre master-planned business park adjacent to Sarasota’s International Airport and near Interstate 75 and U.S. 301.
Totaling more than one million square feet, it will feature KNAPP re-pack automation, which is expected to improve customer service levels while reducing costs to fill orders.

In addition, the air-conditioned warehouse will feature natural daylight concepts and dimmable lighting, as well as a full-building water filtration system. It also is expected to include workforce-friendly amenities.
“Distribution is our core business. So when we build a new distribution center, we want to incorporate as much automation and technology as possible to improve our ability to service our customers while simultaneously lowering our costs to do so,” said Erin Horvath, chief operating officer.
“We are also very excited about providing a working environment designed around the needs of both our customers and our associates.”
UNFI is working on the project with JLL, Broadstone Net Lease, Sansone Group and ARCO Design/Build.
