Food Giant is set to debut a new store in the Five Points West area of Birmingham, Alabama, after a five-year supermarket hiatus for the community.
The grocery chain is joining forces with Meat Depot to re-establish food security for the community by occupying the former Winn Dixie building at 2220 Bessemer Road. Both retailers are affiliated with Albertville-based wholesaler Mitchell Grocery.
Final touches are being completed on the renovated store for a grand opening celebration on April 5. The festivities will begin at 8 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting, and the first 100 customers in the store April 5-7 will receive a free bag of groceries.
“We are looking forward to providing access to fresh, quality food options at low prices to the Five Points West area,” said Jay Mitchell, Food Giant president. “This store has been years in the making, and we are excited to be able to give local residents the shopping experience they deserve.”
The new store will feature a large selection of farm fresh produce, with many fruit and vegetable options cut fresh in-store daily. It will offer a deli with store-prepared hot foods, fresh salads and sandwiches, and extensive offerings from its fresh seafood market. Food Giant will partner with Meat Depot, which will operate its fresh and bulk meat department.
Meat Depot offers a variety of fresh meats cut daily in-store by butchers, a variety of packaged “Pick 5” meats and vegetables and bulk meat items – both fresh and frozen sourced – in truckload buys from around the country.
“The goal behind Meat Depot’s store concept is making grocery shopping on a budget possible without giving up quality,” said Brad Snyder, Meat Depot owner. “Where Meat Depot differentiates from most discount stores is focusing on having real meat cut by real butchers in the store.”
This store will be the first Meat Depot to be co-located with Food Giant, due to the popularity of their recent stores in Roebuck, Sylacauga and Northport. Unlike Meat Depot’s other locations, this store will not be affiliated with Fresh Value.
