Stater Bros. Charities’s Jack H. Brown Heroes Challenge raised $1 million for charities March 4 at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa in Indian Wells, California.
The event hosted 350 sponsors and special guests, including seven Congressional Medal of Honor recipients and 11 professional golfers, including honorary tournament host Chairman Dave Stockton, Lee Trevino, Gary McCord, Donna Caponi-Byrnes and Brittany Lang.
At the Heroes Challenge Awards Banquet on March 4, Stater Bros. Charities awarded $310,000 to local nonprofits that are making an impact through their community initiatives in Southern California. These organizations included the Congressional Medal of Honor Society ($50,000), Michelle’s Place Cancer Resource Center ($50,000), Children’s Fund ($50,000), FIND Food Bank ($50,000), Shoes That Fit ($50,000), C4 Foundation ($50,000) and Hunter Lopez Memorial Foundation ($10,000).
The events culminated on March 5 with the Heroes Challenge Golf Tournament, which was played at the 36-hole Indian Wells Golf Resort. The day allowed Stater Bros. employees and the event’s corporate sponsors to meet with professional golfers while doing good for the community.
“It’s because of our generous sponsors and the time given by our Medal of Honor recipients and professional golfers that Stater Bros. Charities can fund the important work of nonprofits throughout Southern California,” said Nancy Negrette, Stater Bros. Charities chairman and president.
“While our participants get an opportunity to come together to enjoy a single day of golf and each other’s company, their generosity enables us to help the people in our communities every day of the year.”
Named after Stater Bros.’ late executive chairman, the Jack H. Brown Heroes Challenge Golf Tournament celebrates Brown’s legacy of honoring those who served and continue to serve the country, in addition to his support of the communities served by Stater Bros. Markets.
The event also hosted seven Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. The recognition is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the U.S. The recipients in attendance were Harvey C. “Barney” Barnum, Patrick H. Brady, Salvatore A. Giunta, Robert J. Modrzejewski, Robert M. Patterson, Clinton L. Romesha and James A. Taylor.
In addition to the Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, 11 professional golfers attended to support Stater Bros. Charities Jack H. Brown Heroes Challenge. The professionals included former U.S. Ryder Cup Captain and host Dave Stockton, World Golf Hall of Fame inductees Lee Trevino and Donna Caponi-Byrnes, Gary McCord, Brittany Lang, Don Pooley, Dave Stockton Jr., Ron Stockton, Jin Park, Dan Boever and local star Charlie Reiter.
