Sunbury, Pennsylvania-based Weis Markets has donated $1 million to 17 regional food banks and two food pantries in its seven-state market area as part of the company’s 15th annual Fight Hunger program. The donation includes customer contributions made at checkout in Weis stores throughout 2022 and a large corporate donation.

“We are grateful to our generous customers and dedicated associates for their continued support of the Fight Hunger program,” said Bob Gleeson, Weis Markets SVP of merchandising and marketing.

“As a local grocer, it’s important to Weis Markets to support food banks and pantries in the communities where we operate. These organizations continue to overcome challenging conditions to provide essential services to our neighbors in need.”

As part of the campaign, Weis Markets presented donations to several of its largest partner food banks. These contributions include $275,000 to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and $200,000 to the Maryland Food Bank.

“We are blessed with Weis Markets’ ongoing and strong support of our mission and their dedication to ending hunger in our communities,” said Joe Arthur, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank executive director.

“This generous gift will provide more than a million meals to neighbors in need this holiday season and beyond. Without partners like Weis Markets and their customers, we could not meet the needs of our neighbors, and we are truly grateful.”

Additional recipients of Fight Hunger donations include: York County Food Bank, CEO Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank, CHOW Broome County Council of Churches, Community Food Bank of New Jersey, Damascus Help, Food Bank of Delaware, Food Bank of the Southern Tier, Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, Helping Harvest Food Bank, Western Maryland Food Bank, Mountaineer Food Bank, NORWESCAP, Philabundance, Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley, Open Link Food Bank and Owl’s Nest Food Pantry.

“Thanks to Weis, the Maryland Food Bank will be able to continue purchasing nutritious food for our neighbors who are feeling the impact of inflation on household expenses,” said Carmen Del Guercio, Maryland Food Bank president and CEO. “This generous gift will support our efforts to continue meeting the increased need for food assistance across Maryland.”

Founded in 1912, Weis Markets is a mid-Atlantic food retailer operating 197 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Virginia.
