The South Point Grocery store has opened its doors at 136 Webster Ave. in Memphis, Tennessee. The store will hold its grand opening and ribbon cutting on March 10.
Rick James, CEO and owner of Castle Retail Group, and Tom Archer, owner and president of Archer Custom Builders, have collaborated to deliver a modern, full-service grocery store to downtown residents.
South Point will carry an assortment of fresh produce, dairy, frozen food, ice cream, beer and wine, and includes a deli department and meat service counter with an onsite butcher.
“We are extremely pleased to bring South Point Grocery to downtown Memphis,” James said. “Our goal was to deliver a truly unique urban market that pays tribute to South Main and the Arts District that it serves, and we believe we have accomplished that.”
Though South Point’s main goal is to provide downtown residents with all of their ordinary grocery needs in one shopping experience, there’s a few additional elements. Local chef Josh McLane will spearhead the kitchen, featuring 12-15 sandwich offerings for customers to “grab and go.”
Locally-operated and certified humane Home Place Pastures will be showcased in the meat department. The front porch allows seating for 42, arranged in a work/eat/meet/entertainment style for customers. And finally, the neon signage – designed and created by Chuck Mitchell and Frank Balton Sign Co. – allows South Point to solidify its place in Downtown Memphis.
The scope of the South Point Grocery project is a nearly $2.5 million transformation of a 100-year-old building that was originally designed as a grocery warehouse. Archer purchased the building in 2017 with the hopes of bringing a grocery store to the South Main area.
“Rick and the South Point Grocery family are exactly what I was hoping for and what our neighbors downtown have been asking for,” Archer said. “We are so pleased to welcome their family business to our neighborhood. Plus, we have been able to save another historic building in the process – giving it new life and new purpose.”
The full square footage of the first floor is 13,250 square feet, with about 9,000 available for the sales floor. The store is furnished with all new equipment and will showcase local vendors from across the Mid-South.
“This is an exciting time for our South Main neighbors, our suppliers, our company and our family,” James said.
