Dollar General has opened its first store in Washington state, increasing its national presence to 46 states. The store opened in Cathlamet in Wahkiakum County.
“Dollar General is proud to extend our store presence and bring our mission of serving others to Washington state residents. We are proud to be able to open and operate stores to serve our customers and communities with an affordable and convenient retail option particularly during these unprecedented times,” said Steve Sunderland, EVP of store operations. “We believe the opening of each new Dollar General store represents positive economic impact, and we look forward to being a longstanding business partner and serving our Washington customers.”
A grand opening celebration for the new store located in Cathlamet is expected to be announced at a later date. Dollar General also plans to open additional stores in Washington and currently has six stores under construction.
As part of its mission of serving others, Dollar General recently announced several efforts to continue supporting customers and communities throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. This includes dedicating its first hour of operations every day to senior customers and providing the medical community, first responders and the National Guard with a 10 percent discount on qualifying purchases through April 30. Stores also continue to close one hour early to allow for employees to clean and re-stock each evening. The company also recently announced an approximate $35 million investment in bonuses for eligible employees who perform work over a six-week period and is offering employees a 30 percent discount on private brands through early May.
To support currently-heightened demand both in Washington and throughout the country, the company is also planning to hire up to 50,000 employees by the end of April across its field, distribution center and private fleet networks. New employees hired during the six-week period are eligible for employee bonuses.
Additionally, Dollar General provides employees with competitive wages, world-class and award-winning training and development programs and benefits including day-one eligibility to telemedicine, health insurance coverage options, 401K savings and retirement plans, tuition reimbursement, paid parental leave, adoption assistance and more.
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation also awards grants each year to nonprofit organizations, schools and libraries within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center to support adult, family, summer and youth literacy programs. Since its founding in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $172 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 11 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
Dollar General is based in Goodlettsville, Tennessee.
