On May 9, Food Lion will host three grand openings in the greater Norfolk, Virginia, market. The celebrations mark the completed purchase of the stores from Supervalu earlier this year. The locations are:
- 1615 General Booth Blvd., Virginia Beach, Va. 23454
- 608 Mercury Blvd., Hampton, Va. 23663
- 683 S. Hughes Blvd., Elizabeth City, N.C. 27909
The stores will open to the public at 8 a.m. on May 9, following a 7:45 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony. As part of the festivities, the first 100 customers in line will receive a free tote bag and mystery gift card valued between $5 and $200.
“Food Lion has been a proud member of the Norfolk community for nearly 40 years, and we are excited to offer even more customers an easy, fresh and affordable shopping experience,” said Rick LaCroix, SVP, southern division. “We look forward to bringing an expanded assortment of quality, fresh products to our customers, while keeping the low prices they expect from Food Lion. We are excited to welcome the community into our newest stores.”
During the ceremonies, Food Lion will donate the equivalent of 30,000 meals to each stores’ partner food pantry, including Freedom Fellowship Food Pantry in Virginia Beach, Virginia; Buckroe Baptist Church food pantry in Hampton, Virginia; and Albemarle Food Pantry in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. These efforts are part of the grocer’s commitment to donating 500 million meals by 2020 through its hunger-relief platform, Food Lion Feeds.
The store will feature a pharmacy and expanded offerings in the deli department, including hand-battered chicken and a selection of grab-and-go meals, as well as a salad and wing bar. In addition, Food Lion’s produce departments will feature more organic options and fresh-cut fruits and vegetables prepared in-house daily.
The Virginia Beach store will be open daily from 6 a.m.-11 p.m., and the Hampton and Elizabeth City stores will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. Each store will employ about 100 associates, creating nearly 300 jobs in the greater Norfolk market.
Based in Salisbury, North Carolina, since 1957, Food Lion has more than 1,000 stores in 10 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states and employs more than 63,000 associates.
