Kowalski’s Markets
Founded in 1983 by Jim and Mary Anne Kowalski, Kowalski’s Markets began with a single store in Edina, Minnesota. Observing the potential of an under-performing grocery store on Grand Avenue, Jim Kowalski, then working for Red Owl, and his wife Mary Anne invested their life savings and a loan from a friend to embark on their entrepreneurial journey. Fast forward to May 2024, the Kowalskis opened their flagship Edina Market at Southdale Center, marking a significant milestone in their expansion. This location, housed in the former Herberger’s building, features various culinary offerings, including the company’s first Skoops Ice Cream Counter, The Burger Bar, Pizzeria Pezzo, Starbucks Coffee café, and a Nékter Juice Bar.
Today, Kowalski’s Markets boasts 11 locations across the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Jim and Mary Anne Kowalski, along with Kris Kowalski Christiansen, have garnered recognition as industry leaders, with Jim honored as Minnesota Grocer of the Year and Mary Anne as the National Grocers Association Woman of the Year. Their daughter Kris also received accolades as Entrepreneur of the Year in the Upper Midwest. However, the true measure of success for Kowalski’s lies in their commitment to building enduring relationships with customers and employees, embodying their core values of excellence, innovation, and community engagement.
