The United Family and Rainier Fruit donated 5,000 pairs of socks to Texas nonprofits in February through their Apples and Pears on a Mission initiative, the companies announced.

The donations, intended to support the homeless community, were made possible by a portion of proceeds from Rainier Fruit pear and apple sales during the fall and winter months of 2024.

The program has donated more than 30,000 pairs of socks over the past six years, officials said.

Socks often are one of the most requested items at homeless shelters, but they can also be one of the least donated items. The goal of the initiative is to help put socks in the hands of organizations that help the homeless across Texas.

“For some, a new pair of socks can make a world of difference,” said Joseph Bunting, produce business director for The United Family. “That’s why we are so grateful to partner with Rainier Fruit to do this program for the sixth year. We are also thankful to our guests for participating and helping us positively impact our community.”

Salvation Army chapters in five cities – Abilene, Amarillo, Lubbock, Midland and Odessa – as well as Faith Mission of Wichita Falls received the socks.
