Big Y shared that it has donated 1 million meals through the annual Sack Hunger campaign, providing support for four regional food banks within its two-state marketing area.

The recipients – Connecticut Foodshare, The Greater Boston Food Bank, The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts and Worcester County Food Bank – work with soup kitchens, food pantries, senior programs, daycare centers and many other offerings of the 2,100-member agencies they help.

Throughout this past holiday season, customers and employees took part in the Sack Hunger campaign at Big Y supermarkets or Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors stores. Every $5 donation amounted to 10 meals. In addition, Big Y boosted those efforts with proceeds from produce, floral and meat departments, along with a portion of its family of private label brands.

Big Y’s annual Sack Hunger campaign started in 2010, when 740 meals were donated. The grocer’s donation is part of its ongoing support throughout the year, including donations of meat, fresh produce and bakery goods, along with grocery, frozen food and dairy items.

“Each year, our customers and employees come together to support families across Massachusetts and Connecticut impacted by food insecurity during the holiday season,” said Michael P. D’Amour, president and CEO.

We are thankful for the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those in need, and we appreciate everyone involved in spreading hope throughout our communities.”
