With the help of its customers, Save A Lot donated 67,252 bags of food to organizations fighting hunger as part of its Bags for a Brighter Holiday effort.

Throughout November and December, shoppers at 480 Save A Lot stores across the country bought pre-assembled bags of food that were donated to food charities and pantries. To amplify the impact, the company donated an additional $3,500 in gift cards to help seven of the recipients with groceries.

The donations totaled about $336,260 worth of food and gift cards. Each bag was filled with private label and brand-name food items, including pasta, stuffing mix, canned vegetables and other staples.

Seven of the participating stores sold more than 1,000 bags, including:

  • 4,284 bags at the 2271 E. Bearss Ave. store in Tampa, Florida;
  • 2,015 bags from the 1050 W. Industrial Blvd. store in Cumberland, Maryland;
  • 1,840 bags at the 5916 E. State Road 10 store in Roselawn, Indiana;
  • 1,606 bags from the 111 W. 13th St. in Tyrone, Pennsylvania;
  • 1,254 bags at the 529 Hampton Ave. Hwy. 8 store in Pickens, South Carolina;
  • 1,243 bags from the 161 Center St. store in Ashland, Ohio; and
  • 1,077 bags at the 1480 U.S. Hwy. 51 Bypass E store in Dyersburg, Tennessee.

“Our customers know how to support their community charities in a big way,” said Bill Mayo, chief operating officer at Save A Lot. “The success of this year’s program shows that when our stores partner with local charities, they can make a big impact for people who need it most.”
