After serving their country in the Marines until 1966, two friends saved their money in a cigar box to open a store in Slapout, Alabama. After asking their parents for advice about what to name the store, they suggested calling it “The Boys Store.”
“Years of hard work by all the family members have helped lead us to where we are today,” said Keith Holley, second-generation owner of Piggly Wiggly “The Boys Store” in Slapout and a second Piggly Wiggly location in Pine Level, Alabama.
“We were open 365 days a year through any storm, through anything; we had generators and 12-volt lighting that you can still see hanging above the aisles today. The community knows they can count on us, and we take pride in that.”
Throughout the years, the Slapout location stayed close to the customer’s needs, selling everything from bait and tackle to hardware and groceries.
“Labor became a problem,” Holley said. “We had six traditional point-of-sale lanes and only two staff members; we knew we had to call DCR and implement self-checkouts.”
Implementing four self-checkouts helps the customers and staff alike at the Slapout store.
“Keith sat down with us and explained the challenges they were having, and we were happy to work with the team and suggest the best solution for his locations,” said Blake Gillum, general manager at DCR.
“Holley’s Piggly Wiggly was already using many aspects of the LOC Suite of applications such as fuel and DSD, so adding self-checkouts is an excellent example of how the system can scale to the customer needs.”
Growing the business and opening a second larger location, the team at Holley’s Piggly Wiggly’s priorities included usability, reliability and service to the highest standard; DCR and LOC Software delivered on both.
“The transition was effortless, with minimal training required, and most importantly, our customers found the system easy to use,” said Brittany Baugh of Holley’s Piggly Wiggly. “The streamlined checkout process minimized wait times, improving customer satisfaction and allowing the customer to feel good about where they shop.”
Efficiency is critical with multiple locations the team recognizes. With the LOC Software Suite of applications, you can handle an item from the moment it enters the store through orders or direct delivery. Ensuring the products are on the shelf with the correct signage, selling the items, and finally bringing the customer back.
“The system allows reliable, easily accessible data,” said Marlayna Brown of Holley’s Piggly Wiggly. “It is crucial to have the data and know that the percentages on the product are accurate and easily adjustable at any moment. Our customers expect the best service with our best pricing, and we can do that with LOC Software and DCR.”
Living through the supply chain interruptions also challenged the team to think outside the box and stay on top of their data, receiving, and delivery functionalities.
“I will naturally receive more product during the high volume seasons, but making sure I can pivot is essential. Getting real-time reports and reconciliations to the department managers is key. The system allows us to make better buying decisions, run better pricing, and keep products readily available to our customers,” Brown said.
Gillum concluded, “When we work with our customers like Keith and the entire team at Piggly Wiggly, we take the time to understand their goals not just today but five or ten years down the road. We want them to feel confident they can adapt to their technology needs. Partnering with LOC Software allows our development staff to provide our mutual customers the reliability and flexibility they deserve.”
