Sunbury, Pennsylvania-based Weis Markets has begun its third annual “Weis 4 School” program, which is expected to generate $500,000 in donations for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade schools in its seven-state market area.

“Our Weis 4 School program offers families a convenient way to support their local schools. More than 800 schools participated in last year’s program, and we expect more this year,” said Dennis Curtin, director of public relations.

“Signing up is simple. Once schools join our program and customers sign up in support, they can generate donations for their local schools whenever they shop in our stores.”

The program is open now and runs through April 30. Weis Markets has invited schools its seven-state market area to participate in the program.

Schools can designate a coordinator to enter information for their school at weis4school.com.

After they register, schools will receive a barcode which they can pass on to interested families and school supporters, who then take a copy of the barcode to a store and have it scanned one time with their Weis Preferred Shoppers Club card to link a Club card to their preferred school.

Afterward, qualifying purchases made with a connected Weis Preferred Shoppers Club card will generate reward points and subsequent donations for their schools. Due to laws and regulations, lottery ticket, postage, alcohol, tobacco, gas and milk purchases do not qualify for points.

Public, private and religious schools and daycare centers are eligible to participate. Donation checks will be presented after the program concludes on April 30.

Founded in 1912, Weis Markets is a mid-Atlantic food retailer operating 197 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York West Virginia and Virginia.
