Hy-Vee is the title sponsor of a new drive-in movie theater that will be located at Valley West Mall in West Des Moines, Iowa. The theater officially opens to the public on June 6, with a special showing of Iowa favorite “Field of Dreams.”

Dwier Brown, who played John Kinsella (Kevin Costner’s dad) in the film, will make a special appearance to introduce the first movie of the season and be available for a meet and greet with attendees.

The Hy-Vee Drive-In Theater at Valley West Mall will be located in the parking lot south of the former Younker’s department store. HD On The Go Big Screen LLC will operate the theater throughout the summer. Food and beverage vendors will be onsite, including a bar for those 21 and older. No outside food or beverages will be permitted. There will also be a free play area for children.

The outdoor venue will be able to accommodate approximately 98 vehicles, with 75 spots at the front of the venue for people who would prefer to bring chairs (up to six people) and sit outside. Throughout the summer, three movies will play every Thursday through Sunday beginning with a children’s movie in the afternoon and two features in the evening. The theater will be available to rent for private use Monday through Wednesday for groups and businesses to hold fundraising events or special employee nights.

“As things slowly start to return to normal, Hy-Vee wants to help people get out of the house in a safe and COVID-friendly manner,” said Anna Stoermer, district VP of Hy-Vee’s Des Moines West district. “By bringing back the experience of a nostalgic, drive-in movie theater, we believe we can help families create memories while making the most of their summer.”

The first movie to play at the Hy-Vee Drive-In Theater on June 6 is the 1989 “Field of Dreams” which stars actor Kevin Costner as an Iowa farmer, who built a baseball field in a cornfield. The film was shot on location in Dyersville, Iowa. Movie listings and ticket information can be found at hyveedriveintheater.com.
