Fareway Stores Inc., based in Boone, Iowa, is a growing Midwest grocery company currently operating 122 stores in a five-state region. The company’s mission is to provide the highest quality products, while treating customers like family and valuing dedicated employees. Its stores are known for their full-service meat departments, farm-fresh produce and exceptional to-your-car customer service. Fareway is a family-owned business, recognized as a top 10 employer in Iowa, and has more than 12,000 total employees.
The first store opened for business at 624 Story Street in Boone, Iowa, on May 12, 1938. Fareway’s concept of a self-service grocery store was considered revolutionary, allowing shoppers to pick out their own groceries rather than submitting a list to someone who would package everything for them. Shopping carts were a novelty, referred to as “rubber-tired gliders” that carried shopping baskets.
