On Friday, Aug. 23, Valley residents had a chance to see vivid imaginations and steady artists’ hands put to the test at Food City’s fifth annual cake decorating competition at the Food City supermarket on Arizona Avenue and Ray Road in Chandler.
During the event, six bakery specialists from Food City bakeries across Arizona showcased their decorating talent in real time as they morphed mounds of fondant, candy and flavorful fillings into edible works of art.
This year’s event didn’t have a specific theme, so bakery artists were able to put their skills to the test and let their imaginations run wild to create their masterpieces. The winning cake design will be offered to customers later this year, and will become part of the cake line that Food City bakeries feature.
Food City makes cakes from scratch for birthdays, quinceañeras, weddings, baby showers and other special events–at highly competitive prices. Custom cakes start under $2 per slice.
For more than 60 years, Food City has been serving the Hispanic community in Arizona. Its locations carry aisles of traditional Mexican foods, along with items found in traditional grocery stores. Food City also reaches out to the community by hiring people from the neighborhoods it serves, and holds car seat and water safety events, mobile dental clinics, back-to-school immunizations, backpack giveaways and other cultural celebrations.
