Houston Food Bank

The holidays will arrive early for the Houston Food Bank and its more than 600 partner agencies with the donation of as much as 2.5 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables. The donation will be made Dec. 13 as part of the Houston Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association’s annual “Gift of Produce.”

Two and a half million pounds of produce is equivalent to 5.5 servings of fresh produce for each food-insecure resident in metro Houston.

Each year for the last 26 years, the Houston Food Bank has received a generous Gift of Produce from the Houston Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association, a nationally recognized professional organization whose membership includes retailers, wholesalers, growers and shippers.

Since the event’s inception in 1988, this gift has grown from 100,000 pounds to more than 1 million pounds each year for the past 11 years. In total, this event has brought in more than 24.85 million pounds of produce.

In addition, Food Town has committed to donate $25,000 again this year.
