Food City officials broke ground June 6 on a new supermarket on Lee Highway in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The 56,000-square-foot retail supermarket, which will create 50-75 new area jobs, is expected to open early next year and will serve as a replacement for its current location.

“We appreciate the support the residents of Chattanooga and Hamilton County have shown our company, and we’re excited to provide our loyal customers with a much-needed new state-of-the-art Food City to better serve their needs,” said Steven C. Smith, Food City president and CEO.

The Chattanooga Food City store will include an in-store bakery and deli, as well as an Asian wok, fresh and hot food bars, hickory wood smoker, sushi and a café area that sits 38.

Full-service meat and seafood departments will offer customers quality meats including Certified Angus Beef and pre-marinated/seasoned oven-ready products. In-house butchers are available to cut steaks and fresh meat to order. Expanded grocery, frozen food and produce departments boast a selection of gourmet, specialty and vegan items.

The new location will feature several energy saving concepts, ranging from energy efficient glass cooler doors, parking lot lights and refrigeration systems to motion sensors and 100 percent LED lighting.

The store will have a pharmacy with a drive-thru, a Starbucks cafe offering an assortment of blended hot/cold coffees and beverages and a Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union branch location, providing a full range of financial services.

“At TVFCU, we’re dedicated to providing an incredible, hassle-free and enjoyable experience for our members,” said Todd Fortner, president and CEO of TVFCU.

“We’re excited to announce the opening of a TVFCU branch inside the new Food City. This partnership allows us to create an unbeatable one-stop destination for groceries and banking, bringing this exciting convenience to the community.”

Headquartered in Abingdon, Virginia, K-VA-T Food Stores – Food City’s parent company – operates 155 retail outlets throughout southeast Kentucky, southwest Virginia, east Tennessee, north Georgia and Alabama.
